James W. Beard (b. 1828)

James W. Beard was born on February 6, 1828 and lived in Mint Spring as a Tanner and Farmer.

He married Margaret Gillispie (1838-1872).

From the 1870 Census his children are:

Sallie age 16 (1860 census lists her name as "Sarah")
Franklin age 13 (Laborer)
William age 12 (Laborer)
David age 8
Laura B. age 5
Elizabeth age 2

His real estate value is listed as 1000 and personal estate as 100 (assume these are in 1870 dollars). Census records do not indicate that any of them could read or write although many are listed as having attended school in the previous year.

1870 census records also indicate that his father aged 66 was living with him at that time as well. It is assumed that his mother must have passed away by this time since there is no mention of her.
